Big and Brilliant Goal Setting

Here we go again! A brand new year, a brand new decade! Are you ready to do something memorable this year?

There is actual merit in reflecting on the past year to see what we achieved, chances we didn’t take, the moments we missed, or fears that got in the way of our dreams. Did you think about making a big change in location or lifestyle last year? Were you hoping to buy a house but the market kept you from achieving a new place to call home?

January is a great time to renew the energy it takes to consider a buy or sell! Let’s face it - considering moving even for the best of reasons can be an overwhelming and daunting thought!

Setting out a clear evaluation process that fuels the energy for a big move can start your 2020 back on a path that is not stuck in the muck, or off the trail but rather headed in a clear direction.

Implementing the following strategies for your goals starts at your kitchen table. It is not driving around in the winter to visit open houses or throwing your Visa down at HomeSense to stage your home (although these might be motivational :))

If you are wanting 2020 to be a year with a significant look at the biggest investment of your life, consider these starting steps in the process:

  1. There is more potential when you put something on paper.

Write it down, and manifest the ideals of what and why you want in a new home. This is not the task list or action plan that will be following. This is the goal - to downsize, to find a family home, to be a first-time homeowner, to invest in a retirement community.

If you have a partner or family members involved in this process, review it together. Post it somewhere! Seeing it on paper makes it real and will be that call when you are making small decisions daily that call you to ensure it aligns with this goal.

2. Time matters

We all have exactly the same amount of time, and you just set a pretty lofty goal that is going to require you to invest time! We all have the same amount of time and how we manage it with that big lofty goal in mind will be a major factor in our ability to be successful at achieving it. Use your time to intentionally become informed buyers or sellers.

3. Use your Calendar to Help you Achieve your Goal!

Schedule yourself time to work on your goal! If your goal is to find your first home in 2020, schedule time into working on that goal, like an appointment time that is protected and sacredly cherished. Schedule time each week to manage those tasks to allow your goals to flourish.

If you aren’t sure what to put on paper, the things you should be doing with your time, or need support getting the action steps into your calendar, we can help. Here is a simple checklist to help you get started if you are in the process of goal setting to buy or sell.

Selling:

  • Declutter - consider this your pre-packing incentive to put away anything not needed including personal pictures.

  • Deal with any obvious repairs that are needed or painting that will freshen up and update your home.

  • Change and service Furnace/ A/c filters if needed

  • Enhance your Curb appeal by cleaning up your yard with seasonal maintenance and remove anything that is not necessary

  • Secure a Mortgage with your bank and make sure there are no fees to sell

  • Decide where you want to live in and what type of home you want

  • Choose an agent you trust

  • Hire a lawyer you trust

Buying:

  • Get preapproved for your mortgage

  • Choose an agent - decide what you are looking for and have your agent set you up on a search to receive listings with your criteria

  • Hire a lawyer you trust

  • Secure home Insurance

  • See as many homes as you can - you may change your criteria

We offer a free consultation that will help you develop a realistic framework needed to make 2020 the year that you achieve that big, lofty, brilliant goal.
