Choosing Essential Goals for your Home
It's that time of year again! New Year. New Mindset. New Goals.
And this year, we are reflecting in a new way.
Debating and deciding the essentials for this year has become a common term.
Taking a good look in the rearview mirror of 2020 may have some great learning and lessons for us. 2020 was full of restrictions and challenging circumstances, and we have all adopted our own list of what is "essential" in our life.
Many of our "essentials" have encircled where and how we live.
So is it time to add "Our Home" as a category in your goal setting?
Every New Year, we embrace or find pressure in setting goals for the coming year. Setting annual goals requires obligatory figuring out or identifying what we want in our lives, whether it be our relationships, material desires, and lifestyle that will improve our quality of life from the year before.
But goal setting is often a frustrating process because of past experiences, and often, we fear it's a risk. We set goals that we ended up giving up on, missing the mark on or blatantly dismiss, compliant not to switch things up or do the hard work to reach our dreams.
We know there is value in the process of reflecting on the year past and using that evaluation to spearhead new directions, initiatives or practices. And if there is any year that is deserving of our careful reflection, it is 2020.
I always tell clients to identify what is essential when they are house hunting; number of rooms, space, logistics to work or play, room specifications, etc.
Maybe after a long span of spending time at home, you have new clarity about what is essential to you as you set goals for the future.
In thinking about what will optimize an excellent quality of life for you at home, evaluation is necessary. We genuinely lose when we don't learn from past experiences. The pandemic has much to teach us about what we would dream of having or not having in our definitions of home sweet home.
"The pandemic would have been easier if…"
I had an equipped baker's kitchen because we did a lot more baking.
Green spaces were closer to me because I began a daily walking routine.
I had room for my yoga mat somewhere to exercise.
My kids had a recreation area for toys and video games.
I had a home office now that I am working from home.
My favourite chair had a window view.
There was room in the garage for all the stuff.
We had a pool in the summer to enjoy on hot days.
Sound familiar?
Feel stuck on a treadmill of wishing but not moving forward with a plan?
Are you caught in a cycle of not addressing or following through on making the home you have more loveable or chase a house you want?
Did you spend the last year just stuck because it seemed too daunting to make a shift?
How do you get out of the rut?
Take time to reflect. A simple yearly evaluation process about the functionality and adoration you have for your home will start your new year in a clear direction.
To help you in a New Year goal-setting process about your home, here's three simple strategies I recommend:
When you put something on paper, there is more potential - Write it down and look at it regularly! What is essential? What would you want to change or add? Once you have created goals with your partner or family, review them together on paper or digitally. Seeing it written makes it real and heightens responses that call you to your goals.
Use your Calendar to Help you Achieve your Goals - If your goal is to have your house on the market by spring, schedule time for all the tasks and action steps that must take place to make that happen. Protect and sacredly cherish that dream.
Share your goals with a professional. Choosing a realtor to help you puzzle out how to create a realistic plan can fast-track and offer a clear strategy to help you achieve your goals.
If you can evaluate your past hills and valleys living through the last year's pandemic through reflection and then grow from them, you are ready for 2021. Your goals will be more realistic, and your willingness to take risks to propel your quality of life with a home you love will prevail. If you are ready to set goals regarding your most significant investment, we would love to help you get started.
