5 Tips for Choosing a Realtor

Choosing a Realtor is a big decision! Very big!

After all, they are the person or team who will help you and support your goals regarding the most significant investment of your life. Selling or buying a house can be a pretty stressful experience if you don’t have a realtor to help you navigate the process.

But how do you choose the right realtor for you? There are many great realtors and brokerages out there, but you do really need to “click” with your choice. While we would love to be a reputably strong option for every potential buyer or seller, we know that finding a great agent is not only an important decision but a personal decision as well.

We understand that there is no magic formula or checklist for finding the perfect agent for you, but we believe finding a realtor is worth investing time and thought into. Many variables may help you resonate with a realtor, but beyond personality and intuition, we recommend you look for these attributes:

  1. Willing to Go the Extra Mile

No doubt commissioned careers do make time more valuable! And it is thoughtful for potential buyers and sellers to know that and be considerate of it. But if you are thinking about a house to look at and are made to feel guilty or that you are inconveniencing them in requesting a showing, then you have a problem. The Realtor you choose should see your business as a privilege and be willing to work their hardest to not only help you achieve your goals but with the confidence to avoid regrets.

2. They keep appointments and value your timing.

Although you cannot always be at the top of your to-do list, a realtor that is right for you will respect your time and be diligent in showing you that. If you want to see a property with limited availability, you want to know your agent will work hard to accommodate your request.

3. Communicate effectively

Everyone communicates differently, so make sure your chosen agent communicates how you are comfortable! For example, if you prefer face-to-face or phone calls to email or texts, make sure that is their preferred communication style. You also want to make sure that you are free to ask questions, that hesitation of time to think about decisions will be respected and honoured.

4. Reliable experience and knowledge

You want a realtor who understands the market of the area you are working in, knows the recent trends and has experience with negotiating that is reputable. It is ok to dip deeper to make sure you understand their knowledge of the area and the real estate market. You want to ensure they have the track record you need to have a positive experience. Quizzing your realtor about the past market in the local area you are selling or buying will provide information to help you discern if they are the right realtor for your business.

5. Feel free to Interview

Every agent has a different approach or angle in dealing with clients, just as every client is also different. Personality matches, experience, communication style, and dependability are all factors to consider for finding the best match for you. Read reviews about the realtor you are considering to see what people have said about their experiences.

Ultimately, you will be spending a lot of time with your chosen realtor, so you want to choose someone who you get along with and will be effective to trust with your investment decisions. Taking the time to find the best person to earn that role is worth the investment to help you with your more considerable investment as a buyer or seller.
